Where do I get a building permit?
Permits are sold at City Hall, 115 E Smith St during normal business hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
Do I need a building permit or license for a project on my own home?
Yes. Work that will change the exterior dimensions or a supporting wall are to be permitted. Owner occupants may work on the house without a license with exception of electrical or plumbing work
Do I need a permit to re-roof a building?
Yes. A permit is required to ensure the new roof is in compliance with building code and is done by a qualified licensed contractor.
How much are the permit fees?
The fee is based on the total building valuation:
$0 to $2,000 - $25.00
$2001 to $5,000 - $35.00
$5,001 to $10,000 - $70.00
$10,001 to $50,000 - $100.00
$50,001 to $100,000 - $150.00
$100,001 to $500,000 - $275.00
$500,001 to $1,000,000 - $350.00
$1,000,001 and over $500.00 plus $.50 for each additional $1,000 or fraction thereof
How do I ensure I am not building over utilities?
Call DIg Safe by dialing 811 before starting any exterior project. They will mark the utilities on the property in question. The service is free.
Do I need a permit to build a storage shed?
Yes. Storage sheds are considered an accessory building and must be built 5' from the primary structure and property lines and anchored down. Garages with all access must be built a minimum of 14' from the rear property line.
Can a property owner build within a utility easement?
No structure of any type can be built within an existing utility easement.
Do I need a permit to put up a fence on my property?
Yes. The owner must provide the location of the property pins or property lines for the permit. Fences must stay within the property lines and are limited to 6' height in rear and side yards and 4' in front yards. No electrified or barbed wire fencing is permitted.
Do I need a permit to build a deck or patio?
Concrete patios on grade do not require a permit. Patio decks built 15 inches or more above grade and all covered decks require a permit and must be built to code. Utilities must be flagged by calling Dig Safe - 811.
How do I schedule a building inspection?
Call (620) 327-4412. Report the address, type of inspection you are requiring, and the time you would like the inspection to occur. Allow 24 hours notice to the inspector to schedule your inspection.
Am I required to have smoke detectors in my home?
ALL dwelling units, regardless of type, are required to have smoke detectors. The number, type and location of each detector varies depending on the age and type of dwelling. Call (620) 327-4412 for details.

How do I register my pet?
Pets are registered by species, breed, and gender at City Hall. The registration fee for each non-neutered or non-spayed cat or dog is $15.00 and $3.00 for each neutered or spayed cat or dog.
How do I re-schedule a court appearance?
Contact the court at (620) 327-2020 to request a continuance. Continuances can be granted once on initial appearances for up to two weeks. Then confirm all changes with the Court. All other continuances must be reviewed and granted by the judge.
